Covert War on Human Psyche through Food

Addictions to Stimulants and Depressants

Hi Sweetness,

Do you know that feeling where you feel like your heart aches for something or someone very close to you that You Just Cannot Have?

Something like Unrequited Love

That will surely slow poison you to death

I’m not calling out toxic boyfriends, but something probably more urgent -

Caffeine, Sugar, and Gluten.

The stimulant-depressant trio that prevents us from ever being our real, default sober self.

Most of us here have been addicted to stimulants from childhood. Have you ever noticed how much candy, dessert, and pseudo-dessert (like cereal) children have? As adolescence hits, that sugar is paired with worse things like perpetual fast food, soft drinks, alcohol, and caffeine.

Schools too don’t shy away from selling energy drinks like Gatorade and Redbull, and refined gluten-based bakery items.

As women, we enter our childbearing years dependent upon this trio.

It’s fancy to be a “coffee addict” or wash down nasty carbs from junk food with a Red Bull or sugary drinks like minute-maid “juices”.

Caffeine is known to entirely alter brain chemistry. It binds to adenosine receptors, blocks them, and affects the release of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine, dopamine, acetylcholine, serotonin, glutamate, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). (NIH.gov) It stimulates the adrenal glands, leading to an overproduction of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, causing fatigue, anxiety, and hormonal imbalance.

Its regular intake changes the grey matter of the brain. In short, You are never really YOURSELF on caffeine.

Moving to Sugar. Many young women are prey to this drug, dependent on it for emotional support especially during their periods. Women stuff themselves with all kinds of carbs and sugar when their bodies require more protein and warm and nutritious foods. Women unknowingly also tend to be dependent upon desserts for energy, which is quickly followed by an energy crash, and again an energy spike with another sugary treat. The need for a serotonin boost is easily filled in with sugar, but at what cost?

The final is the depressant - Gluten. In today’s time wheat is a highly exploited and genetically modified grain. It causes inflammation and digestive issues and contributes to brain fog, joint pain, and skin problems.

Additionally, it’s the most addictive of the three. This is why fast food joints rarely serve rice as a form of carbs and focus on refined wheat. The energy crash from gluten is often followed by a depressive craving for more; and as it takes a toll on the digestive system, you feel sleepy after eating it.

What’s your take on the trio? Write to me, and maybe we can exchange experiences in pursuit of better health and fertility!

Presently I’m OFF the three and taking a diet high in animal protein and fat, for a major body reset. And I feel like I’m meeting myself for the first time, falling back into a state of calm 🙂
